Weight Loss & Muscle Mass: An Essential Connection

 

The clinical key I have found to evaluating any weight loss plan is determining if a patient will lose muscle mass.  This is why for any weight loss patient, we always check %muscle and %fat using body impedance testing.

I have seen many patients on limited calorie diets who lose weight however their %fat goes up and %muscle goes down.  This loss of muscle can have long-term consequences for both weight gain and overall health.

This is why if losing weight through diet and exercise, I use an individualized approach to lose weight while preserving muscle mass.  If a patient wants to lose weight rapidly using a low calorie diet, the only method I have seen preserve muscle mass is the use of pharmaceutical grade hCG using proper dosage and administration.
